In the rapidly evolving luxury automotive sector, asset preservation is paramount. Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Paint Protection Films (PPF)—frequently referred to as "invisible car film"—have emerged as the definitive standard for protecting high-end paintwork from environmental degradation, road debris, dynamic abrasion, and ultraviolet radiation. For premium car rental operators, whose fleet asset values directly determine balance sheet health and residual value yields, shielding vehicles with advanced TPU film is no longer optional; it is a critical strategy to control depreciation and reduce fleet reconditioning costs.
This whitepaper analyzes the manufacturing dynamics of TPU paint protection films, detailing the essential parameters of high-end cast extrusion lines. By focusing on the extrusion technology required to process aliphatic TPU resins, we outline how precision engineering, localized production efficiencies, and state-of-the-art automation are enabling manufacturers worldwide to satisfy the strict requirements of luxury car rental fleets.
The production of optical-grade TPU paint protection film requires extremely precise extrusion equipment. Unlike standard packaging films, automotive protective films must combine optical clarity, elasticity, puncture resistance, and long-term UV resistance. This demands highly specialized screw designs, melt delivery components, and temperature control zones:
In the paint protection film industry, the choice of polymer chemistry is critical. TPU resins are classified as either aromatic or aliphatic. Aromatic TPU contains benzene rings which degrade when exposed to sunlight, causing the film to yellow, turn brittle, and stain.
Aliphatic TPU, synthesized with saturated isocyanate structures, remains optically clear under extreme UV exposure. Luxury car rental fleets in high-solar environments (such as Southern Europe, North America, and the GCC region) depend on aliphatic TPU films. Applying aliphatic films ensures that rental vehicles retain their original paint finish, avoiding premature yellowing that would degrade the vehicle's appearance. Gwell's extrusion machinery is configured specifically to process high-viscosity aliphatic TPU resins, helping manufacturers produce film that meets the strict standards of the luxury car market.
Luxury car rental operators manage high-value assets where paint damage leads to depreciation and lost rental days. Installing TPU paint protection film protects these vehicles from gravel impact, key scratches, swirl marks, and tree sap.
Premium TPU films also offer self-healing properties, where micro-scratches disappear under engine heat or hot water. This feature allows rental companies to quickly restore the vehicle's glossy appearance without costly repainting, maximizing fleet uptime, maintaining high rental rates, and securing stronger resale values at the end of the vehicle's service life.

Aliphatic TPU uses open-chain chemical bonds that do not absorb UV light, keeping the film clear and yellow-free over years of outdoor exposure. Aromatic TPU contains benzene rings that degrade and yellow when exposed to UV radiation. Aliphatic TPU is the industry standard for premium automotive paint protection film (PPF).
We integrate automatic T-dies coupled with online scanners. The system measures the film's thickness Profile in real-time, sending data back to auto-tuning bolts on the die to adjust the gap, maintaining thickness tolerances within ±1.5%.
TPU is highly hygroscopic. Before extrusion, the material must be dried using a desiccant dryer with a dew point below -40°C. This lowers the moisture content below 0.02%, preventing structural defects and optical bubbles during processing.
Luxury car rentals experience high utilization rates. TPU film protects the factory paint from rock chips, abrasions, and weathering. Its self-healing capability allows minor scratches to disappear under heat, reducing paint touch-ups and preserving the vehicle's resale value.
