Technical DetailsIn modern smart devices, especially tablets, automotive navigation consoles, and industrial touch interfaces, the cover panel protects critical liquid crystal displays (LCD/OLED). While glass was historically the primary cover medium, its brittleness and processing costs led display engineers to seek lighter, high-performance polymeric materials. This demand gave birth to co-extruded Polycarbonate (PC) and Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) composite sheets.
A standard PC/PMMA co-extruded sheet combines the mechanical properties of two distinct polymers. The PMMA outer layer (acrylic) provides high surface hardness (typically up to 4H or 5H after coating), exceptional optical clarity (>92% light transmission), and excellent scratch resistance. Meanwhile, the PC inner layer provides massive impact toughness, crack prevention, and heat resistance. The co-extrusion process must run continuously with ultra-low thermal and mechanical strain to prevent optical birefringence, which can distort colors and degrade screen readability.
GWELL's advanced PC/PMMA optical-grade co-extrusion machinery features complex, multi-stage processing systems configured to eliminate typical extrusion defects such as gel spots, carbonation, bubbles, and roll mark lines. The process relies on these engineering systems:
A key quality parameter for optical tablet covers is the elimination of internal stress. When polymer molecules are oriented due to excessive shear and fast cooling, they display birefringence under polarized light, creating rainbow patterns. GWELL solves this by employing high-precision oil heating systems in the calender rolls, keeping temperature tolerances within ±0.5°C across the roll surface. Slow cooling under tight tension controls allows the molecules to relax, producing isotropic optical qualities.
Utilizes online non-contact thickness scanners (beta-ray or optical reflection) with feedback loops to automatically trim extrusion die-lip heaters, keeping thickness tolerances below 1%.
The calender unit and winding station operate under positive pressure laminar flow hoods (ISO Class 5-6 equivalent), eliminating dust contamination on the hot polymer sheet.
Specially calibrated cantilevered winding stations feature constant tension control, preventing micro-scratches or structural deformation of thin cover sheets.
