The Architecture of High-Yield PS Extrusion

Polystyrene (PS), covering both General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), is one of the most widely adapted thermoplastic polymers globally due to its excellent rigidity, thermal formability, and electrical insulation properties. What are the main differences between GPPS and HIPS in extrusion setups?
GPPS is highly brittle with high optical transparency, whereas HIPS contains polybutadiene rubber particles to increase impact strength, rendering it opaque. The main difference in processing lies in shear sensitivity and screw geometry. HIPS requires lower shear rates to prevent rubber phase degradation, calling for barrier screws with mixing sections. GPPS, being more prone to thermal cracking, requires precise temperature control zones and high-efficiency vacuum degassing to prevent bubbles or surface defects.
How does Gwell achieve optical clarity on co-extruded PS/PMMA sheets?
Optical clarity depends on eliminating contamination, minimizing internal stresses during cooling, and achieving mirror-like surface finishes. What co-extrusion feedblock configurations are available?
We offer fixed-geometry feedblocks as well as adjustable-vane co-extrusion feedblocks supporting up to 5 or 7 distinct layers (e.g., GPPS skin / tie layer / EVOH core / tie layer / HIPS structural core).
