Frequently asked questions concerning design parameters, operational requirements, and material handling in PMMA and engineering polymer sheet extrusion.

Eliminating internal stress is crucial to prevent wrapping and distortion during downstream processes (e.g., thermoforming or cutting). Gwell achieves this by utilizing a specialized 3-roll calendar system equipped with independent oil temperature controllers. Precise, gradual thermal reduction prevents rapid solidification of the outer skin, keeping the polymeric structure tension-free.

PMMA provides premium UV resistance, high gloss, and scratch resistance, but is relatively brittle. Co-extruding a thin PMMA layer over ABS (PMMA/ABS) or Polycarbonate (PMMA/PC) creates sheets that combine PMMA's aesthetic surface qualities with the high impact strength, structural stiffness, and cost advantages of ABS or PC. This co-extruded material is widely used in automotive body panels and sanitaryware.

Our sheets dies utilize an automatic lip adjustment system coupled with an online thickness scanner. The thickness scanner continuously sweeps the extruded sheet and transmits dimensional data to the PLC. The PLC then adjusts the thermal expansion bolts in the T-die lip to regulate localized material flow, keeping thickness variations under ±1.5%.

PMMA is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from ambient air. Extruding wet PMMA leads to surface silver streaks, bubbles, and loss of clarity. We recommend pre-drying PMMA resins in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80°C to 90°C for at least 3 to 4 hours to lower moisture content below 0.02% before introducing it to the extruder feed throat.

For high-temperature, high-viscosity engineering plastics, we use specialized bimetallic barrels and screws constructed from high-alloy steels (such as Hastelloy or custom tool steels) with robust heating zones. These handle the corrosive outgassing and shear stresses typical of high-temperature processing.
