In modern civil engineering, underground structures such as high-speed railway tunnels, subway corridors, and highway tubes are designed for a service lifespan exceeding 100 years. Preventing water ingress is paramount to structural longevity. Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA) and Polyethylene (PE) geomembranes are preferred over PVC due to superior elastomeric behavior at low temperatures, high chemical resistance, and ease of thermal welding. Designing extrusion machinery for these high-grade waterproofing sheets requires precision thermal management, high shear rates, and advanced roll calendering.
Global infrastructure investments demand thicker, wider, and multilayered waterproofing sheets. Modern specifications require composite structures, typically incorporating a signal layer (a thin, brightly colored top sheet) to visually highlight physical damage during rock-bolt installation. EVA extrusion equipment is evolving towards wider configurations (up to 4.2 meters) to minimize seam-welding in the field. Additionally, integrating inline geotextile laminators directly with the extrusion system creates composite drainage-barrier layers in a single pass, saving labor and improving bonding strength.
International engineering contractors are shifting from standard commodity sheets to custom polymer configurations. Key requirements include:
EVA copolymers are highly temperature-sensitive. Excessive heat or high shear forces in the extruder barrel can lead to cross-linking or thermal degradation, compromising the elasticity of the sheet. Gwell’s custom-engineered extrusion systems utilize low-shear, barrier-style single or twin-screws paired with intelligent liquid cooling zones. The T-Die features automatic lip adjustment driven by micro-thermal expanders and integrated beta-ray thickness scanners. This closed-loop control system continuously adjusts the melt flow profile, maintaining the strict tolerance margins required for high-risk tunneling applications.
The cooling and crystallization rate of the EVA sheet determines its ultimate flexibility and puncture resistance. Gwell utilizes a vertical three-roll calender unit equipped with independent dynamic oil heating and cooling controls. Surface embossing patterns (such as diamond, dotted, or smooth finishes) are engraved onto the calender rollers to optimize field-bonding with geotextile layers or shotcrete. Inline dual-station winding systems with automatic tension control ensure that the finished heavy-gauge rolls are tension-free, preventing curl and memory deformation when rolled out on the irregular rock faces of deep tunnels.

Expert answers addressing the extrusion, metallurgy, and processing queries of international engineers.
For modern railway and subway tunnels, the standard thickness ranges from 1.2 mm to 2.5 mm, depending on geological conditions and hydrostatic head pressures. Gwell's extrusion lines are designed to handle sheets up to 3.0 mm, maintaining strict thickness tolerances using integrated automated T-Dies.
The automatic T-Die uses closed-loop thermal expansion bolts connected to an inline beta-ray thickness gauge. If a thickness variation is detected across the sheet web, the PLC adjusts the power to the corresponding thermal bolt, altering the die lip gap in real-time. This reduces start-up calibration times and keeps thickness variations under ±1.5%, saving raw material.
The signal layer is a thin (usually 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm) light-colored (yellow or white) layer co-extruded onto a darker backing sheet. When the sheet is fastened to the tunnel rock face, any scratch or puncture during construction exposes the dark backing, providing a visual cue for inspectors to repair the damage before concrete is poured.
EVA is highly shear-sensitive and prone to thermal degradation if processed at excessive temperatures. We design low-shear barrier screws with a high L/D ratio (30:1 or 33:1) and incorporate multi-point ceramic barrel heaters with independent air-cooling fans. This maintains consistent melt temperatures and prevents polymer chain scission, preserving the required tensile strength and elongation metrics.
EVA and POE require precise low-shear screw configurations to prevent cross-linking, alongside dedicated calendering rolls to manage crystallization. PVC requires specialized anti-corrosion chrome plating on screws, dies, and barrels due to the release of hydrochloric gas at high temperatures. Gwell offers dedicated, metallurgy-optimized extrusion setups for each polymer family.
Gwell offers complete project coordination, including factory footprint layout design, remote commissioning assistance via IoT connectivity, and on-site engineering dispatch for installation, screw calibration, and operator training.
