Learn SpecsAn Industrial Whitepaper Analysis of Encapsulation Technology Trends under IRA Frameworks
Following the enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the United States, the domestic PV supply chain is experiencing unprecedented expansion. Incentives under the Section 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit have created a massive call for domestic content. However, while wafer and module assembly factories are scaling rapidly, the local production of component materials—specifically high-performance encapsulation films like EVA, POE, and EPE—remains a critical bottleneck.
To qualify for the 10% Domestic Content Bonus, developers must ensure a minimum percentage of all structural inputs are processed in the US. Our specialized Solar Film Extrusion Lines offer American polymer processors the direct technical capability to establish local, high-volume production facilities. By extruding high-precision EVA and POE sheets locally, US manufacturers can secure strategic supply chains while mitigating tariffs and geopolitical volatility.
Photovoltaic encapsulation films are subject to extreme thermal and UV stress over a 25-to-30-year operational lifecycle. Selecting the appropriate extrusion configuration is crucial. The primary materials used are Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) and Polyolefin Elastomer (POE). Due to processing complexities and cost constraints, co-extruded EPE (EVA/POE/EVA) three-layer composite films have emerged as a dominant industry standard.
Widely utilized for its excellent transparency, low processing temperatures, and superior adhesion to solar glass and backsheets. However, EVA is susceptible to moisture ingress over time, leading to hydrolysis and the formation of acetic acid, which induces Potential Induced Degradation (PID) in solar cells.
The premium choice for double-glass bifacial modules and N-type cells (TOPCon / HJT). POE boasts a Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) that is nearly 10 times lower than EVA. It offers superior PID resistance and displays no acid release, making it critical for severe climatic applications across the southern and coastal United States.
EPE structured film features a core POE layer sandwiched between two EVA layers. This configurations optimizes production costs, maintains high mechanical adhesion properties similar to pure EVA, and provides the anti-PID and moisture barrier performance of POE. It requires specialized multi-layer co-extrusion technology.
Because POE resins have a narrow molecular weight distribution and high melt viscosity, traditional extrusion systems often suffer from "melt fracture," screw slippage, and heat build-up. Gwell's specialized barrier-type screw designs operate at lower processing temperatures, preventing premature cross-linking while achieving output speeds of up to 45 meters per minute with minimal thickness variation (±1.5%).
Gwell Machinery represents the pinnacle of modern Chinese engineering excellence. Across our three high-tech production bases, covering a total area of 866,000 m², we integrate advanced Factory 4.0 principles. Every extrusion system is equipped with cloud-enabled diagnostic systems, high-precision gravimetric dosing units, and automated thickness scanning systems.
